Wonderful post Peldon, latchkey children do consume library space and materials which could have been useful to others, but at the same time some children who are more interested in learning new things may also take benefit of that time to learn new things! However, I fully agree that no matter what, kids should not be left unattended in library, as librarians are not the one to look after them. And, parents/guardians should also be equally responsible and attentive towards their offspring.
Cheers!

Furthermore, the idea of login system is great, as you said it will prevent them to have access to inappropriate contents. As per the screenshot shown by you, it seems they have very limited computers as such, is it? Or do they have higher number of those computers in that library?

I also agree that people sometimes are bound by the pre-defined procedures even if they are creative, they will not get chance to show it. Creativity is anything that brings change, change in lifestyle, change in work environment, change in everything comes with creativity! Like you said creativity is not always creating new thing that does not exist in present world, it’s also about learning and applying things in life practically. And the maker space is providing that opportunity to people. They can actually learn new things, create and understand new things and apply them in their life!

Support -The trends towards supporting HDR stds #2528Saurav KhadkaParticipantHi Peldon, the post was nice and informative, though you did not have any ideas about library information, still you presented it well. Like our other friends commented, its hard to answer your questions, because it totally depends on those who are doing research. For instance, if I was a research student I could have provided informative answers to those questions, but I hope this research section on QUT’s website must have been very effective for the researchers. As we have been studying in QUT we know how they value any information and their dedication towards their students.

Saurav KhadkaParticipantA nice post Kate, I also agree with your point of view that not all makerspaces need 3D printer to be a good makerspace. A library is a place to learn, it is an information center and one cannot argue that it must have a 3D printer. Libraries have been providing lots of valuable information related to research, innovation, and references as well, however they do have lots of makerspace programs available for different people to learn lots of new things. Still they are doing good and will be doing better. Thus, I also say that its not necessary for a makerspaces to have a 3D pinter!
Cheers!
Saurav KhadkaParticipantHi Steph, nice post! It is so true that how technology was then and how it is now. Just like Chris mentioned in above comment, about graphic designing in high school during those time is a very good example. Also, as library is the place to learn new things, it is a information center, and a makerspace too. And hence, it has been providing with that opportunity to the local peoples or to public to learn new things, being innovative, and building skills which I think should be given continuity in future too with possibly more advancement.
Saurav KhadkaParticipantHi Chris, it is a nice and informative post. Australian libraries do provide lots of research support. However, I don’t agree that they should be prioritizing postgraduate students to undergraduates and give more time and attention to them. It’s a librarian’s job to provide all possible information to the ones who need. And for the last question, I too agree that they don’t necessarily have to be expert on any subject matter, if they are it’s good, but the important thing is to know, and to be able to guide the users on how to find the needed information for any researches. Once again, a wonderful post Chris.
Cheers!
Saurav KhadkaParticipantThank you Peldon, I strongly recommend you and your son to be involved in such programs. They will help improving child’s learning process and make them smart 🙂
Cheers!
Saurav KhadkaParticipantNice post Chris, after going through your post, I found closing the library for two days in a week pretty inconvenient for public. They could have at least reduced the opening hours! Also, I agree with the point that you made, they should try to get more involvement in such programs. Running any classes with couple of people is useless (in your post, 3 librarians for 2 students is really awkward!). May be they should try to do a survey, find out what age group, and what kind of programs will that particular age group people be interested in, and then run the programs. I hope that will improve the teaching and learning process consecutively.
Cheers!
Saurav KhadkaParticipantHi Kristy, this was really an informative post! After going through your post I went through instructables’s website and found lots of activities that would be fun and worth learning. Thank you for sharing this information with us. Probably after this semester is over, I will try something out of it 😀
Saurav KhadkaParticipantExactly Ruth, even if they cant access such technology, at least having knowledge of what we have in present world will not make them feel like a “left-behind” people in front of others 🙂
Saurav KhadkaParticipantThank you Katherine for a wonderful comment, there always are hurdles in between path to success, nevertheless, we can always look forward to other available alternatives and work it out with them 🙂
Saurav KhadkaParticipantThank you Deborah, makerspace is way good idea of intensifying people’s knowledge and yeah, just as you said it will definitely makes us more sustainable 🙂
September 20, 2015 at 6:57 pm in reply to: Week 7 activity -Information and digital literacy — issues based reflection #2130Saurav KhadkaParticipantHi Louise,
The point you are making here is so true. We keep learning about lots of things, which also includes lot about digital literacy but that learning is not preparing anyone to get job in future. Yes, technology is such a field in which new things comes in every now and then, but if we do not look at the basics before starting to learn about advance technology I don’t think it will be much fruitful. At the same instance, if we skip the basics and be much focused on the new topics again it will be difficult for the learners to catch up. What I believe is, both type of literacy is needed simultaneously. Rather than being much focused on theoretical aspect, practical approach of literacy should be followed which will further help people to get job after they graduate!
September 20, 2015 at 6:11 pm in reply to: Week 9 | Program review | Makerspaces – Children's craft activities #2123Saurav KhadkaParticipantHi Peldon,
Nice post, and few things I also would like to add up is the librarians or whoever is supposed to co-ordinate the program should have come and ask how is everything going. Though task may be easy to do but I think they should be responsible for the program they are running. Maker program are new ways of involving people into learning new things, and especially library can be considered a big repository of knowledge, information and learning, more of these programs should be conducted. I think they should also try to involve more people and be more attentive and concerned towards them.
Cheers!
